Club President 2006
In the late 1960's some forward looking members of Carshalton Rifle Club took the plunge and decided to take advantage of a grant form local/central government towards the cost of a new indoor rifle and pistol range to provide a permanent home for the long established club. In those days Sutton Council insisted on having a Councillor on the Management Committee and as a competitive shot I was the obvious choice. I watched the hard work done by so many with the clearing of the site, the laying of the base and the eventual prefabricated building grow. The total cost in monetary terms was about £5,000 but the labor and effort of the members was many times this.As a result of the foresight of a few, a lot of people have enjoyed rifle and pistol, (until the stupid change in the law) shooting for 30 years in a well appointed and friendly club. Since then your committee has made major improvements to the building and it is now one of the best pure shooting clubs in the country. I had to give up shooting a few years ago as my eyes had deteriorated, but I know that in spite of the obstruction of government, both parties, Carshalton has flourished and is even more popular than when it moved to its present site. I look forward to the next milestone of 50 years in Beddington when we will have even more to celebrate.
